In recent years, the number of global public charging piles has continued to rise, increasing from 441,000 in 2017 to 1.308 million in 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 43.68%. As the global public charging pile industry continues to heat up, it is estimated that the number of global public charging piles will reach 1.926 million in 2021 and further increase to 2.765 million in 2022.

2.Global Public Charging Pile Market Composition

Data shows that in 2020, there were 1.308 million public charging piles globally. Among these, the number of global public slow-charging piles was the highest, at 922,000, accounting for 70.5% of the global total. The number of public fast-charging piles was 386,000, accounting for 29.5%. The primary reason for this distribution is the higher technical barriers associated with fast-charging piles.

3.Number of Global Charging Pile-Related Patent Applications

With the development of the global charging pile industry, related technologies are constantly innovating and breaking through, leading to a yearly increase in the number of patent applications. Data shows that the number of global charging pile-related patent applications grew from 6,217 in 2017 to 7,694 in 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.4%. As of December 16, 2021, the number of global charging pile-related patent applications for 2021 reached 3,502.

4.Composition of Source Countries for Global Charging Pile Patent Applications

Currently, China is the largest source country for charging pile technology globally, accounting for 73.7% of all global charging pile-related patent applications. The United States follows, accounting for 8.4% of charging pile-related patent applications. Germany, South Korea, and Japan account for 7.3%, 2.4%, and 2.3% of charging pile-related patent applications, respectively.

5.Global Charging Pile Subsidy Policies

Sustainable development is a long-term goal for countries worldwide, and the promotion of electric vehicles is clearly an important measure for environmental protection. Since the introduction of electric vehicles, countries around the world have successively introduced subsidy policies related to electric vehicle charging piles to support industry development, strengthen the promotion of electric vehicles, and enhance the construction of electric vehicle infrastructure. Support policies from various countries play a crucial role in the development of the electric vehicle charging pile industry, with subsidy policies and supporting demands jointly stimulating industry growth.

6.Analysis of the Market Status and Development Prospects of China's Charging Pile Industry in 2022

On December 14, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Implementation Plan Notification for Revitalizing Industrial Economic Operation and Promoting High-Quality Industrial Development," which proposed accelerating the promotion and application of new energy vehicles, speeding up the construction of supporting facilities such as charging piles and battery swap stations, and further promoting the construction of charging infrastructure. This brings development opportunities to China's charging pile industry.

(1)Continuous Growth in the Number of Public Charging Piles

Data shows that as of November 2021, members of the alliance had reported a total of 1.092 million public charging piles, an increase of 30,000 from the previous month and a year-on-year increase of 57.1%. Among these, there were 450,000 DC charging piles, 646,000 AC charging piles, and 406 integrated AC/DC charging piles. From December 2020 to November 2021, the average monthly addition of public charging piles was approximately 33,000.

(2)High Concentration of Public Charging Pile Enterprises

As of November 2021, there were 13 companies operating over 10,000 charging piles each nationwide. These are: Star Charge (operating 246,000), Teld (operating 235,000), State Grid (operating 196,000), Yunkuaichong (operating 136,000), China Southern Power Grid (operating 41,000), EV Power (operating 35,000), Huichongdian (operating 25,000), SAIC Anyue (operating 22,000), Wanma Aichong (operating 19,000), Shenchezhewang (operating 19,000), China Potevio (operating 18,000), Hengtong.Dingchong (operating 11,000), and Wancheng Wanchong (operating 10,000). These 13 operators account for 92.7% of the total market share, while other operators account for the remaining 7.3%.

(3)Sustained Increase in the Number of Privately Installed Charging Facilities

From January to November 2021, the incremental number of privately installed charging facilities continued to rise, with a year-on-year increase of 198.1%, while the incremental number of public charging infrastructure increased by 59.1% year-on-year. By November 2021, there were 1.293 million privately installed charging piles.

(4)Favorable Policies Drive Industry Development

As the new energy vehicle industry is still in a stage of difficult development, with many uncertainties and immature technology and products, the government should continue to provide strong support for this emerging industry. Efforts will continue to promote the demonstration and verification of high-power charging technology, carry out pre-research work on standards related to high-power charging technology through the construction of high-power charging demonstration pilot projects. As a supplement to existing charging modes, the promotion and application of AC charging sockets will be further accelerated, and the compilation and implementation of relevant technical standards such as the "Integrated AC Power Supply Standard for Conductive Charging of Electric Vehicles" will be continuously improved.

(5)New Energy Vehicles Drive Industry Development

In the future, energy replenishment methods for new energy vehicles will become diversified and scenario-specific. Battery swapping, as a supplement to energy replenishment for operational vehicles, will see further development. It is expected that by 2025, more automobile manufacturers will develop and apply battery-swappable models. For example, cities with a high concentration of operational vehicles will actively promote the battery swap model and provide policy support. Through the promotion of a certain scale of battery swap stations, technological progress and standardization of battery swap facilities will be promoted, exploring new development paths and operational models.

(6)Charging Pile Stock Will Grow

Overall, the prospects for China's new energy vehicle market remain positive, with huge development potential. With the construction of charging stations, the ratio of the stock of new energy vehicles to charging piles in China is gradually becoming more reasonable. Although the layout of charging infrastructure is gradually improving, there are still shortcomings compared to the stock of new energy vehicles, and growth will continue to accelerate in the future.

Conclusion:

Energy charging piles will usher in a period of historic great development under strong policy support. The market space is expected to grow more than tenfold in the next 3-5 years! The scale of the new energy market in the next 5 years will be larger than you can imagine, and as an infrastructure component, charging piles will usher in a medium-term highlight moment
